What is Ar-Ruqya Ash-Shari'ah?

Ruqya is commonly translated in English as "incantation" which carries a negative meaning, since the word incantation is usually associated with magic, spells, and witchcraft. However Ruqya in Islam is the recitation of Qur'an, seeking of refuge, remembrance and supplications that are used as a means of treating sicknesses and afflictions such as Black Magic, Jinn Possession and the Evil Eye.

Ar-Ruqya Ash-Shar'iah Conditions:

Ibn Hajar (rahimuhullah) said there is a consensus on the using of Ruqya if three conditions are met:

  • It must be with the speech of Allah (Qur'an) and his names and attributes.
  • It must be in the Arabic language or what is known to be its meaning in other languages.
  •  To believe that Ruqya has no benefit by itself, but the benefits are from Allah.

Ar-Ruqya Ash-Shirkiyah Prohibition:

Ar-Ruqyah As-Shirkiyah contradicts the conditions of Ruqya Ash-Shar'iah and has in it Shirk (associating partners with Allah). It leads a person to his destruction in this life and the next and increases calamities and sicknesses. This type of Ruqya is prohibited, from the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). This type includes :

  • Magic (whether learning, practicing, or teaching it(.
  • Fortune telling, Horoscopes, superstitious belief, and at-Tameemah (charms and amulets).
  • Shirk (associating partners with Allah) in this regards, takes one outside of the fold of Islam.

Qur'an Verses on Healing :

O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers. (Surah Yunus 10:57)

And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. (Surah Al-Isra 17:82)

And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an, they would have said, "Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?" Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure." And those who do not believe - in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place. (Surah Fussilat 41:44)

Scholarly Sayings on Qur'an :

Ibn Al-Qayyim (rahimahu Allah) says: The Qur’an is the complete healing for all mental, spiritual and physical diseases, all diseases of this world and the Hereafter. But not everyone is guided to use it for the purpose of healing. If the sick person uses the Qur’an for healing in the proper way, and applies it to his disease with sincerity, faith, complete acceptance and firm conviction, fulfilling all its conditions, then no disease can resist it.

How can disease resist the words of the Lord of heaven and earth which, if He had revealed it to the mountains they would have crumbled and if He had revealed it to the earth it would have broken it apart? There is no sickness, spiritual or physical, but in the Qur’an there is that which indicates its remedy, its cause and how to protect against it for those who are blessed with understanding of His Book. [Zaad al-Ma’aad, 4/352]
